Wine and Cereal
An Irreverent Look at Sixtyish and Single
by Susan Luzader
Susan whispers truth bombs in your ear about being sixtyish and single, after 42 years of marriage. With a keen eye for the absurd, she reveals her experiences with barfing dogs, terrorist grandchildren, unfortunate sex, bad Broadway plays, and complicit cousins. She’s the wry yet wise neighbor who invites you to sit a spell on the porch as she regales you with funny stories.
Ironic but light, self-depreciating but packed with zingers, Luzader’s style is stand-up worthy, and Claire Luzader’s accompanying line drawings are a happy compliment.
Christine Wald-Hopkins, Arizona Daily Star
Susan Luzader wrote for others throughout her marriage—newspapers, journals, corporations. Now, needing a way to deal with an unexpected divorce (after her husband suddenly decided to start dating), she writes for herself and for us, as she learns to find the funny side of life.
The stories are short—you can pick up and put down Wine and Cereal throughout the day or week without lessening the enjoyment. Each story is whimsically illustrated by Susan’s great-niece, Claire Luzader.
“Wine and Cereal” is a breath of fresh air. What a refreshing look at life after divorce when you're in your 60's! I enjoyed the short vignettes that could be read right before going to sleep...to put you in the right frame of mind. Smiling!
Amazon Review
There is a sequence to enjoy in the books. Susan begins by trying to fill the hole in her life as she wolfs down cereal from the box while washing it down with wine. She ends Volume One enjoying the renewed image she sees in the mirror—accompanied by a good glass of wine.
Volume Two deals with the challenges of Covid, bad dates, and grimy grandchildren. Volume Three takes us through forest fires, a perilous trip to Alaska, maturing grandchildren, and a bit more wine to hold back the aging process.
This book is so relevant to all women, divorced or not! Susan’s the new Mollie Ivens or Erma Bombeck. She makes you smile and laugh out loud. She celebrates female friendship as we grow older and able to laugh at ourselves.
Amazon Review
Susan shares her funny and humiliating experiences about dating; her warm and wonderful joy in sons and grandchildren; her network of well-meaning friends who keep her sane yet drive her crazy. Spicing up her daily routines are dogs, desert animals, and pet tortoises. Rather than wallowing in self-pity (which she admits to doing while drinking wine and eating cereal) Susan forges head into a brave new world.
